Assistant Manager - Legal (HK)
Role Objective
This role supports the General Counsel (HK & Funds) in managing dispute resolution and litigation matters across the Group’s Hong Kong portfolio. The incumbent will be responsible for effective case management, coordinating with internal stakeholders, external counsel and other service providers, monitoring procedural deadlines and compliance requirements, and providing practical legal risk assessments and recommendations to safeguard the Group’s legal and commercial interests.
Job Duties
- Independently manage litigation and dispute resolution matters, including debt recovery, distraint, possession proceedings, personal injury claims, property disputes, investigations, commercial disputes, settlement negotiations and other contentious matters across all court levels.
- Provide practical legal advice and support to business units on dispute resolution strategy, legal risk, potential business impact and recommended courses of action.
- Coordinate with internal stakeholders, including operations, leasing and finance teams, and with external counsel, debt collectors, mediators, insurers and other service providers to ensure effective case management and execution.
- Prepare, review and manage legal documentation, including instructions to external counsel, legal opinions, pleadings, writs, statements of claim, evidence bundles, witness statements, settlement documents, submissions and other court filings.
- Monitor court timetables, limitation periods, procedural deadlines, hearing dates, mediation milestones and compliance requirements, and maintain robust case tracking and follow-up systems.
- Direct and supervise personal injury claims and mediations, including coordination with insurers, loss adjusters, business units and external counsel as appropriate.
- Support settlement discussions, including assessing settlement options, preparing negotiation positions and implementing approved settlement terms.
- Prepare management reports and updates on litigation status, key risks, financial exposure, case progress, recommended next steps and matters requiring escalation.
- Drive timely escalation of material issues, emerging risks, urgent deadlines and commercially significant developments to management.
- Maintain consistency in litigation strategy, record-keeping and legal documentation, including litigation files, case databases, matter trackers and relevant legal records.
- Conduct legal research and respond to internal enquiries in a timely, practical and business-oriented manner.
- Support the General Counsel (HK & Funds) with workflow prioritisation, case tracking, process improvement initiatives and ad hoc legal projects.
Requirements
- Degree in Law (LLB) or related discipline preferred; candidates with a Diploma in Legal Studies or similar qualification and substantial relevant experience will also be considered; PCLL or another professional legal qualification is an advantage.
- Minimum 7 years of relevant experience, preferably gained from listed companies, REITs, asset managers, property developers or reputable law firms supporting similar clients in Hong Kong.
- Strong understanding of Hong Kong court procedures, litigation processes, mediation and dispute resolution practice.
- Solid experience in litigation, debt recovery, property-related disputes, personal injury claims and settlement management; exposure to IP matters is an advantage.
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage multiple cases, court deadlines and internal stakeholders with minimal supervision.
- Experience coordinating with external counsel, debt collectors, insurers, mediators and other service providers, and managing litigation processes from initial assessment through to resolution.
- Strong analytical skills, sound judgment and the ability to handle sensitive, urgent and commercially significant matters.
- Excellent organisational, stakeholder management, communication and drafting skills, with strong attention to detail and the ability to work under time-sensitive conditions.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office tools, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams, and comfortable maintaining matter trackers, databases and records.
- Exposure to AI, document automation and similar technologies related to litigation and dispute management would be advantageous.
- Fluency in written and spoken English and Chinese (Cantonese/Traditional Chinese) is required; spoken and written Mandarin/Simplified Chinese is desirable but not required.
